Terrifying the newspaper carrier is not recommended

I grew up reading hand-held magazines, comics, newspapers, and hard-cover books. I still read reams of paper. I am not opposed to online material; I did join Medium, but I prefer to flop down on the couch with a dog-eared book in hand.

This story concerns the morning newspaper delivered to us seven days a week. Delivered indicates an item placed or dropped into a receptacle or on the doorstep. Our newspaper is flung from an open window of a speeding car. It may land somewhere in the vicinity of our driveway, or, on occasion, the middle of the road.

We do have a newspaper tube provided by The Boston Globe. The green tube with yellow lettering sits empty, collecting spiders. Everyone but one newspaper person has ignored it. This story is about that carrier, a woman.

She was an early riser, delivering the paper around 5 am, and I loved her for that. Being an early riser myself, I want to read the paper during my breakfast and she delivered it in a timely fashion. Not only was she early, but she also exited her car to place the paper within the Globe tube!

I often walked down to the road to wait for my paper. It was an opportunity to greet the carrier as well give her a tip. One chilly, early winter morning, to…
